The Western
Fjords are one of the most breathtakingly beautiful and least visited
corners of Iceland. The Western Fjords form the most westerly part of
Iceland and geologically are very old. The mountains are high and the
coastline indented by deep narrow fjords. At the foot of the cliffs you
can see seals basking in the sun and whales are often seen off shore.
There is an area of hot springs near Reykjanes at the south eastern end
of Isafjardjup. The best base for touring the Western Fjords is Isafjordur,
the principal town and main trading centre for the region. The town is
surrounded by mountains and the sea. A few buildings can be seen in the
town dating back to the 18th century. There is an excellent natural harbour.
There are many organised tours from Isafjordur which can be booked locally
or in Reykjavik. If you have time the best way to see the fantastic countryside
is by boat.
