Hafnarfjordur Viking Festival

The Hafnarfjörður Viking Festival, held annually in the town of Hafnarfjörður, Iceland, is a vibrant celebration of Viking heritage and culture, taking place each June.

The Viking re-enactment group Rimmugýgur hosts the annual Hafnarfjörður Viking Festival—the oldest and largest event of its kind in Iceland. Held every June around the Icelandic National Day (June 17th), this family-friendly festival spans five to six days and takes place in the scenic Víðistaðatún Park, right in the heart of Hafnarfjörður.  The park is transformed into a lively Viking marketplace, where tents fill the field and costumed Vikings sell handcrafted items like leather goods, furs, silver jewelry, swords, and decorative drinking horns. Festival-goers can witness Viking-style battles, storytelling, dancing, lamb roasting, and demonstrations of ancient Norse life. The hosting group, Rimmugýgur—named after a legendary axe from Njáls Saga, the crown jewel of Icelandic literature—was founded by just seven members in 1997 and has since grown to nearly 200 strong. Ready your shields and journey to Iceland to experience this unforgettable celebration of Viking heritage.
