Essential Tips for When You Visit Iceland

Iceland is a very popular travel destination, but it takes a fair amount of planning and organisation. Unlike visiting Paris or Rome where everyone is familiar with the main attractions, weather conditions and much more, Iceland is a bit of an unknown.

Iceland is a captivating destination for any traveller and with a host of low-cost flight options from North America and mainland Europe to the land of fire and ice, there has never been a better time to visit Iceland. Travelling to Iceland is great any time of year, whether you come for the eternal sun or summer or in search of winter's Northern Lights display is sure to put on a show. To get you started, here are some essential tip for visiting Iceland.

CLOTHING IN ICELAND

Pack, warm, clothing! Iceland's weather is constantly changing so it's important to pack for all seasons. Be prepared for vastly different landscapes and weather conditions because you may need a jacket in the city but not the glaciers. If you plan on getting close to any of the waterfalls in Iceland, make sure to wear your rain gear such as a rain jacket, rain pants and waterproof hiking boots.

The most important thing is to dress in layers that you can pile on or strip off as needed. It's always a good idea to bring a small day bag with you to store extra layers in together with your camera, food, water, etc.

What to Wear on a Trip to Iceland in Summer:

  • Normal underwear and short/ long sleeve t-shirt
  • Woolly or fleece sweater
  • Lightweight outdoor trousers/ pants
  • Lightweight weatherproof jacket with hood
  • Hat, scarf and gloves/ mittens

What to Wear on a Trip to Iceland in Winter:

  • Woollen underwear, thermals, socks
  • Woolly or fleece sweater
  • Outdoor trousers/ pants
  • Warm weather-proof jacket with hood
  • Sturdy hiking boots
  • Warm hat, scarf and gloves/ mittens

DRIVING IN ICELAND

Renting a car in Iceland is the best way to experience the beautiful country; however, there are a few things you should know beforehand. In some way, it is different driving in Iceland than in most other countries. Driving off an asphalt road onto a gravel road can be dangerous and hazardous if the driver is not aware of the change and slowdowns. The weather can impact the driving conditions.

Renting a car and self-driving Iceland on your own is the best way to experience this stunning country, as it truly gives you the freedom to stop at every waterfall, volcano, hot spring, and glacier. Here are some key tips for safe driving in Iceland:

  • When approaching gravel, you should slow down. If you go too fast, you can lose control of the vehicle.
  • NEVER, drive off-road, it hurts nature and leaves marks for decades.
  • If you want to take beautiful pictures of nature while driving, you must find a safe place to pull over and take your picture.
  • If there is a road closed sign, take a different road. It says the road is closed for a very good reason
