West Iceland has many possibilities to offer you, stay and enjoy, refresh your body and soul and get a deeply relaxed. With a great art and culture scene, the people of West Iceland regularly host events and own beautiful museums that preserve the saga and culture of West Iceland.

The area offers great variety of hiking trails and resting places that bring you closer to nature. And what’s better after a good hiking trail than a warm natural pool in a cosy environment? West Iceland has many of those!

  • 11 days car hire with pick up and drop off at the airport

What you'll do

Day 1:

Fly in from your chosen UK airport and land safely at Keflavik.

Pick up your car hire from the airport and drive to your Reykjavik hotel

Take the afternoon to explore the capital and enjoy some tasty Icelandic food for dinner

Day 2:

Drive towards the Golden Circle and explore the area. Combining history, culture and extraordinary nature, you can see Thingvellir National Park and walk among the geological wonders of the fissure zone and in the footsteps of the early Viking settlers where the Althingi parliament was founded. You can then see the Gullfoss and feel the mist of glacial water as it cascades down one of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls.  Finally, you can witness the Geysir and hear the bubbling of the mud pots, smell the sulphur in the air and watch in awe as the geyser Strokkur blasts boiling water into the air.

Day 3:

Drive along the coast road in a westerly direction onto Snaefellsnes Peninsula via Borgarnes where you will be spending 3 nights.

Day 4:

Take the day to explore Snaefellsnes.  The Snaefellsnes Peninsula is a wonderland of great geothermal activity where you can find the most photographed mountain in Iceland, charming little fishing villages and extraordinary sights. The peninsula is often nicknamed “Iceland in a nutshell” due to its vast variety in and contrast!

Day 5:

Continue to explore the area by car and then in the afternoon catch a whale watching trip into the Atlantic from Olafsvik Harbour. Abundant summer daylight combined with a unique mixture of cold and warm sea currents that blend in Iceland's shallow fjords make the Icelandic territorial waters home to a rich variety of krill and fish, and consequently a bountiful feeding ground that attracts twenty-three species of whales.

Day 6:

Take a ferry along with your car from Stykkisholmur in the early morning which stops on the way at Flatey Island to the south shore of the western fjords. Boat arrives at midday. Then drive on to Isafjordur and stay 3 nights.

Day 7:

Explore the majestic western fjords of Iceland. This area  is one of the country’s most spectacular and awe-inspiring regions. The settlements are small and sparse, and between them are untouched landscapes and dramatic features unlike any other in the country. While traversing the Westfjords does require a lot of driving, the surrounding scenery proves that the journey can be quite as amazing as the destination.

Day 8:

Continue to explore the area by car. There is so much to see and do, you won't struggle for choice!

Day 9:

Drive back towards Reykjavik with a one night stop on the way in the area of Borgarfjordur.

Day 10:

Continue your journey back to Reykjavik and spend your last night at a hotel in the city centre or at the Blue Lagoon.

Day 11:

Drive to the airport and drop the car hire off.

Fly back to the UK.
