Skiing in Iceland

The ski areas of Bláfjöll and Skálafell are both located approximately 25 minutes from Reykjavík. Bláfjöll lies to the southwest of the city, while Skálafell is situated to the east. Both areas offer a variety of ski slopes suitable for downhill skiing and snowboarding, as well as cross-country ski trails. Bláfjöll features 14 lifts, while Skálafell has 4 lifts.

The ski areas of Bláfjöll and Skálafell are both located approximately 25 minutes from Reykjavík. Bláfjöll lies to the southwest of the city, while Skálafell is situated to the east. Both areas offer a variety of ski slopes suitable for downhill skiing and snowboarding, as well as cross-country ski trails. Bláfjöll features 14 lifts, while Skálafell has 4 lifts. Skálafell typically operates on weekends from early February through mid-April.

Ski equipment is available for rent on-site, and advance booking is generally not required.  

In recent years, ski area operations have occasionally begun in December, with more consistent openings from early January.

During high skiing season, the opening hours are:
Weekends 10 am - 5 pm
Weekdays 2 pm - 9 pm.
