Opened in 2025, Laugaras Lagoon is one of Iceland’s newest geothermal spas, and it has quickly become a must-add stop on the Golden Circle.
Set on the banks of the Hvita river in the small South Iceland village of Laugaras, it offers a more intimate alternative to Iceland’s bigger lagoons, with calm countryside views and a design that lets the landscape take centre stage.
The lagoon is built over two levels, with the upper and lower pools linked by a walk-through waterfall. Geothermal water of around 38 to 40 degrees C is cooled with glacial water from the Hvita river, and guests can move between the warm pools, a cold plunge, a sauna, and a steam room, or simply relax in the quieter spaces. Swim-up bars serve drinks to enjoy as you soak, and the turf-house-inspired reception building adds a distinctly Icelandic touch.
Its position makes it easy to combine with Thingvellir National Park, the Geysir geothermal area, and Gullfoss waterfall, the river that feeds Gullfoss flows right past the lagoon. Visits are booked by timeslot with no time limit once inside, and the lagoon is open all year round, from long summer evenings and glowing sunsets to crisp winter nights with a chance of the northern lights, and golden autumn colours in between. The on-site Ylja restaurant makes it a destination in its own right, and the lagoon welcomes children from age five.
