What Is the Blue Lagoon?

The Blue Lagoon is a mineral-rich geothermal hot spring located about 40 minutes from Reykjavik and about 20 minutes from Keflavik International Airport. The Blue Lagoon is one of Iceland’s man-made wonders, as it provides warm water year-round, even in the middle of winter. Blue Lagoon Iceland also contains white silica mud and blue-green algae to give the water a milky, soft, aquamarine colour.

How Was Blue Lagoon Iceland Made?

Blue Lagoon Iceland was created with water from the Svartsengi geothermal power plant. The power plant uses heated water vented from the ground from a nearby lava field and lava tubes. The water is passed through turbines to create electricity. The power plant also uses the heated water for municipal water systems.

After passing through the turbines and hot water heating system, the water is fed directly into the Blue Lagoon. The water in the Blue Lagoon is renewed, on average, every two to three days. Due to the mineral-rich deposits in the lava field, the water in the Blue Lagoon is good for moisturising and enriching the skin.
