Tucked into a narrow fjord on the Trollaskagi Peninsula in North Iceland, Siglufjordur is one of the country's most atmospheric small towns.
It's a place where colorful corrugated iron houses line a working harbour beneath ice-capped mountains. Once one of the busiest herring ports in the North Atlantic, Siglufjordur has reinvented itself as a destination for travelers who want a slower, more authentic side of Iceland, without giving up great food, culture, or things to do.
The town's centrepiece is the Herring Era Museum, the largest maritime museum in Iceland and winner of both the Icelandic Museum Award and the European Museum Award. Spread across several historic exhibition buildings along the waterfront, including a 1907 salting station and bunkhouse, a 1930s fishmeal and oil factory, and a boathouse harbour lined with old fishing boats, the museum brings the herring boom back to life with live salting demonstrations and traditional accordion dancing on Saturdays. History lovers can also visit the Folk Music Centre, set in the house where Reverend Bjarni Thorsteinsson once lived, or stop by Segull 67, a craft brewery housed in a former fish factory offering tastings alongside the building's own story.
Beyond the museums, Siglufjordur is a gateway to the wild landscapes of the Trollaskagi Peninsula. Hiking trails wind up into the surrounding mountains for sweeping fjord views, electric bike tours offer an easier way to cover the same ground, and kayaking trips out onto the fjord let visitors see the town from the water. In winter, the same slopes that once framed a fishing town become a small, uncrowded ski area, while summer brings long daylight hours perfect for exploring on foot.
Once considered remote even by Icelandic standards, Siglufjordur is now easily reached by road, connected to the rest of North Iceland through a pair of tunnels that cut what used to be a long detour down to a short, scenic drive. It makes an excellent stop on any Ring Road itinerary through North Iceland, whether as a day trip from Akureyri or an overnight stay to properly explore the fjord.
